ST PATRICK’S CHURCH RENOVATION

The Church Renovation Committee met on Wednesday night to consider updated plans of the church presented by Architects Antony and Nick Russo. The new plans reflect directions received from Bishop Patrick O’Regan and his Consultors plus comments by parishioners. The assembly area has increased in size by 150 square metres by widening the footprint by 2 metres on the North and 1.5metres on the South. The Sacristies have been relocated to the current library room, prayer shrines to Mary and St Patrick have been added, the Stations of the Cross reconfigured to both sides of the Church and the sanctuary crucifix redesigned to reflect a more conventional style. Next steps are to have the projected costs updated and then considered by the Parish Finance Committee before gaining amended building approval from the Shire Council and representing to Bishop O’Regan for approval.

This year’s World Day of Prayer will be held at The uniting Church, 47 James St, Pakenham, on Friday 6th March, at 1:30pm. The focus will be Pray for Zimbabwe. FOR OUR CHILDREN

*BRINGING CHILDREN TO OUR MOTHER, ONE HAIL MARY AT A TIME:*

On the third Saturday of every month, Rosary prayers by the kids and Youth would be offered in St.Patricks Parish, Pakenham, near the mother Mary statue inside the church from 5:15 pm to 5:45 pm.

We all get together with our children and each family does one decade.

Kids shall lead the prayers and we would help them if they need any assistance.

The next children’s rosary would be held on Jan 18.

Note: We request parents to be present with their children for the rosary offering and not just drop the kids off and leave.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD:

is when the children leave the congregation during the Liturgy of The Word to celebrate and reflect on the Sunday Gospel and readings in an age appropriate way. The children are led through prayers, readings and discussions that are adapted to their level of understanding. The children return to the congregation to celebrate The Liturgy of The Eucharist.

Attending Mass together is a part of being a Catholic Family, while Children’s Liturgy of the Word

allows children to enter the celebration more fully by catering to their needs. Parents can also assist children to engage more fully in the Sunday Gospel by looking up the weekly readings prior to attending Sunday Mass.

PASTORAL LETTER TO PARISH AND SCHOOL COMMUNITIES:

East Gippsland Bushfire Response

We are very aware of the immense suffering and loss which has occurred as a result of the bushfires in East Gippsland, the Eastern Mission of our Diocese, over the New Year period.

With lives, homes, livelihoods, stock and wildlife lost through this natural disaster, our hearts go out to all who are suffering.

We acknowledge the significant work of all involved in the ongoing firefight and the relief and recovery process.

The efforts of the local fires brigades have been heroic and the support by the other organisations, government and volunteer, has been enormous and somewhat unprecedented.

Our priority is supporting the East Gippsland communities directly affected and working with local authorities, particularly through Vinnies and Catholic Care, in partnership with other agencies, for the long term.

Vicar General, Rev Peter Slater visited the Bairnsdale relief centre this week. Fr Michael Willemsen, Parish Priest for the Parishes of Orbost, Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale has been at the Bairnsdale relief centre over much of the last week, supported by his parish terms. These Parishes’ territories include seriously impacted communities such as Mallacoota, Buchan, Cann River, Sarsfield, Nowa Nowa and Omeo.

Members of these East Gippsland Parishes are heavily involved in the firefight and recovery and have assisted in many ways including welcoming the displaced into their homes.

The Dioceses of Sale Catholic Education Office (CEOSale) is working directly with School communities, through School Principals, in the affected areas to ensure supports are in place for school families who may have been impacted as they prepare to return for the new school year.

Director of Catholic Education, Maria Kirkwood, has specifically noted the need for ongoing support, beyond the initial crisis period, for families and school community members who may have been impacted. Senior staff of CEOSale are communicating directly with the Victorian Department of Education to ensure a coordinated response to Schools and school communities.

To date, thankfully, we have not lost any parish or school buildings to the fires.

Fr.Slater noted that God’s love and care has been shown through the outpouring of support through the actions of local community members, emergency responders from across Australia, and indeed worldwide support, towards those who need assistance at this time.

Many of those impacted are visitors to the Dioceses who will return home after a traumatic experience; we pray for them as they begin an unexpected recovery journey.

Those wishing to donate money for the relief and recovery in East Gippsland are encouraged to donate to Vinnies and Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund (GERF), as these two organisations are in a position to provide timely support where it is most needed. (See Links below)

parishes across the dioceses, not impacted by this event, are encouraged to take up a collection directed to these two charities at all weekend masses, on at least one occasion, between now and Australia Day.

We continue to pray for the safety of those continuing to fight the fires and for all those affected as they are supported through their journey of recovery.

Yours in Christ,

Rev Fr Peter Slater                               Ms Maria Kirkwood

NATALIA’S STORY

When Natalia was elected School Captain she had the opportunity to take part in the School Peace Project that aims to reduce violence in Peruvian Schools, so that students are able to learn in peace. Natalia received training in leadership and how to promote a culture of peace.

Natalia led an exceptional peace campaign, in which all students in her year designed posters promoting peace, which were then entered into a completion. What was most impressive, Natalia took these posters to the local authority, including the Police, Mayor, Dept of Education and School Principle and explained the need for a culture without violence and encouraged the authorities to enter the poster competition, which they did.

Natalia spoke about the results of this project increasing respect amongst students while decreasing machismo, with teachers trusting the students more and parents realizing the treasures they had in their children.

HELPING REFUGEES A MORAL DUTY: POPE

Human beings have a “binding” moral obligation to save those whose lives are threatened, including the lives of migrants and refugees, Pope Francis said yesterday. Source: Crux.

“We must rescue and save because we are all responsible for the lives of our neighbour and the Lord will ask us to account for them at the moment of judgment,” the Pope said as he met 33 migrants and refugees brought to Rome two weeks earlier by Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the papal almoner.

The group, which included 14 children and teens, arrived in Rome from the Greek island of Lesbos on December 4. Most were from Afghanistan, but there also was a woman from Togo and a young mother and her three-month-old baby from Cameroon. The group included both Christians and Muslims.

Pope Francis blessed a large resin cross constructed around a used orange life vest. The life vest, which the Pope had hung in an alcove by the guest elevators in the Apostolic Palace, was picked up by a migrant rescue organisation in the central Mediterranean Sea on July 3. A small plaque below the cross gives the date along with the GPS coordinates of where it was recovered.

Francis said he wanted the jacket to be part of a cross because the cross symbolises both suffering and redemption through the triumph of Jesus. “The unknown migrant, who died hoping for a new life, participates in this victory,” the Pope said.

Several years ago, Francis was given another orange life vest. He said he gave it to the Migrants and Refugees Section of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development with the comment, “Here is your mission”.

“By that I meant the inescapable commitment of the Church to save the lives of migrants in order to welcome them, protect them, support them and integrate them,” the Pope said, as the group from Lesbos looked on, except for the toddler who played at his feet.

Francis said he wanted to display the life vest “‘crucified’ on the cross to remind us that we must keep our eyes open, keep our hearts open and to remind everyone of the binding obligation to save every human life, a moral obligation that unites believers and nonbelievers.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2019:

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, every year has its mixture of good and bad. Every year has its various successes and failures. Each year has its number of unexpected and unnerving events, as well as its deep joys and successes.

2019 is no different. For many, it has been a tough year. Back in February this year our Diocese seemed to be ringed by bushfires in places around Bunyip, Churchill and Dargo. In late November, it seemed as if the whole country was on fire. Some of our people are facing a challenging new year.

Things feel a little fragile right now for some: the economy is tight; there is not much of a social security net; jobs are under major threat in the Latrobe Valley and in our timber country; some of our young people are uncertain about their future.

While we know that uncertainty and the unforeseen are to be expected in our lives, it leaves us a little unsettled.

And then into this uncertainty once again, as it does each year, comes Advent and Christmas. A reminder that the kind of God we have is a God who first comes to us; a God who is not only God for us, but God with us; a God who reminds us that we are not alone.

At Christmas the One who is our light comes into our lives. The prophet Isaiah tells us that the ‘people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. On those who dwell in the valley of death a light has shone.” This is our story as well.

Our joy at Christmas is not simply the celebration of another birthday. It celebrates that we have someone who is our Light; One who can show us the path of life; One whose light accompanies us especially in the darkness.

If Christ is that for us then Christmas also challenges us to become that Light in our world.

At Christmas we see in the child born in Bethlehem a God who comes in search of us; a God who is our true Light, a God who teaches us that we are not alone. It shows us that we have someone upon whom we can lean.

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, may Christmas 2019 be a time of great peace, trust and forgiveness, for you and your families and friends. May we rediscover Jesus Christ our true light, a light that is always there. God is good, good indeed.

Bishop Patrick O’Regan

Bishop of Sale
